# Steady PDF

Free browser-based document tools. Every tool runs on the visitor's own device; no file is uploaded and there is no backend that receives one. The only request that leaves the origin is a self-hosted, cookieless page-view counter that sets no cookie and no identifier and never sees a document.

Limits worth repeating: redaction removes only what the visitor marks; a scanned PDF has no text layer and cannot be converted to Markdown or Word without OCR, which these tools do not perform; compression works on photographs and offers no file when the saving is not worth a second copy; password protection is AES-128 under the standard security handler at revision 4, not AES-256, and the strength of the encryption is the strength of the password.
